Sheep Electronic Identification (EID)

Otherwise known as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)

Radio Frequency Identification has been used extensively within the Australian cattle industry, forming the basis of the Cattle National Livestock Identification System.  Under this system, RFID tags provide a means of tracking individual animal movements from the property of birth through to slaughter.

In conjunction with lifetime traceability, RFID tags introduce new opportunities for sophisticated individual animal management at farm level.  This is particularly significant within the sheep industry, where traditionally all data collection and animal management occurs on a mob by mob basis.  Through the use of RFID tags, animals can be monitored, and managed individually throughout their life with vast amounts of data recorded.  This type of management system is termed Individual Animal Management (IAM).

What Electronic Identification isnt!

EID isnt auto-drafters -  Yes they are a wonderful tool, but they are not EID, and are not always necessary.  Almost anything can be achieved with a handheld reader, and a manual weighcrate.  Auto-drafters simply make some jobs quicker and more labour efficient.

EID isn't about owning lots of fancy toys - In fact you don't have to own any equipment at all.  Contractors can undertake all of the major tasks on farm, eliminating the need to own, and understand any equipment.  Some producers are already doing this.  The only difference to the work that they undertake themselves is the type of tag applied at marking.

EID doesn't have to be expensive - The amount you spend on your EID system will depend entirely on your desired outcomes, your enterprise type, enterprise size and need for efficient operations.  No EID system has to be expensive.

Know what you want from EID. Know what you need from EID.  And only spend the money that you need to achieve these outcomes.
