Walk over weighing (WOW) is a system where a particular attractant (generally water) is used to entice sheep to walk over a platform, one at a time.As each sheep crosses the platform, its weight is recorded. While WOW can be used for mob-based weight recording, the inclusion of RFID technology allows the recording of individual weight gains or losses, and therefore accurate tracking of animal performance.
The system has been particularly useful for monitoring weights in remote areas, where the mustering of animals is time consuming or may be detrimental to their health.WOW may also play a role within enterprises by remotely recording weights at times of the year, where labour is a limiting factor. The technology relies on collecting sufficient data so that anomalous records can be excluded. The Sheep CRC have developed software designed to remove any outlying figures, and return only useful data.
